It's back. There's no escaping it. Monday morning is here. Again. And so it begins. In today's news: it's a transit double-downer this morning, what Occupy Toronto is up to today, more news about the Toronto Triumph (you're welcome in advance), gambling on Ontario Place, a Toronto cop faces perjury charges, and your fancy food needs—resolved!
Everyone loves the Monday morning commute, right? It’s going to be even more fun today for those in the GTA as VIVA and York Regional Transit drivers have walked off the job. The transit strike means headaches (on top of that regular Monday morning throb) for hundreds of thousands of commuters as 85 routes are affected. This means that the GTA’s 40,000 GO bus users might have some company this morning—their drivers reached an agreement last night and will be on the job this morning.
In other strike news, Occupy Toronto will be joining Novotel hotel workers and their union, UNITE HERE, tonight at 5 p.m. to rally at the hotel chain’s Toronto location. According to Occupy Toronto, Novotel has waged an anti-union campaign at three Novotel hotels in Ontario—the Novotel North York, the Novotel Mississauga, and the Novotel Ottawa—and a number of workers have been disciplined and terminated after publicly supporting the decision to join the union. The Occupy group will meet at St. James Park and then march to the Novotel at 45 The Esplanade.
If you’ve been obsessively following the changing roster of the city’s own lingerie football league (who can blame you?) and trying to figure out where it all went wrong, feel free to point your blame directly at the Toronto Triumph’s second-rate coaching and shoddy equipment that has led to sprained ankles, concussions, and pulled hamstrings. Shocking, isn’t it? You’d really think this league would attract the best and the brightest coaches. It’s a real head-scratcher.
If the Toronto Star‘s rumour mill is correct, Toronto grinders and slot-playing grannies may soon have a way to get their casino fix locally. The cards have been stacked against the idea of a Toronto-based casino in the past, but word on the street is that it would be built within Ontario Place, and with that “attraction’s” ongoing desire (and need) to revitalize, the odds are not completely against this idea.
If you woke up troubled and asking yourself “who guards the guardians?” you will be relieved to know that someone seems to be. A Toronto cop has been charged with perjury, accused of covering up his brother’s alleged involvement in the execution-style murder of a multi-millionaire jeweller. Daniel J. Costa, 29, of 23 Division has a bail hearing tomorrow in Newmarket court after allegedly misleading York Region Police homicide investigators probing the July 2 murder of Alexander Kucovic.
Good news, fancy food–lovers and roach-haters, Pusateri’s Avenue Road location will re-open this morning—hurrah! Bring on the critter-free aged vinegar and no-more-rodent-style gourmet marshmallows!
