Extra, Extra: Picture Captions, Polar Bears, and Planet in Focus

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

Last night's launch of the Planet in Focus festival.

  • The Planet in Focus film festival launched last night at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The environmentally themed festival runs through the weekend; here are some promising screenings on the programme.
  • Sad news from the Toronto Zoo: a second polar bear cub died today. Zoo staff have been attempting to nurse a set of polar bear triplets that were born there this week back to health, after they were rejected by their mother.
  • The Advocate is giving a shout-out to a Toronto organization, Searching for LGBTQ Health, which has launched a new campaign to fight biphobia.
  • Toronto, apparently, is starved for humour—either that, or we think the Globe and Mail is. Last night and all throughout the day, this celebrity photo gallery has been getting attention for its funny captions, with lots of people speculating that the paper had been hacked or an intern had decided to get fired in a blaze of glory. The truth is much less dramatic, as it turns out—the Globe says it’s a recurring feature, and no big deal. That didn’t stop them from running an interview with the funny (and still unnamed) caption-writer, who also now has a Twitter account.
