Extra, Extra: A Beaver in the Square, an App for the PATH

Hey, look out! Behind you! Photo by Mike Last, courtesy of the Historica-Dominion Institute.

  • Raising awareness for the My Parks Pass program—offered through a partnership between Parks Canada, Nature Canada, and the Historica-Dominion Institute—60 grade 8 students from the Karen Kain School for the Arts gathered in Yonge-Dundas Square this morning for a campfire-style singalong, accompanied by a giant beaver named Parka, who makes us a little nervous.
  • As more people hop on their bikes to commute to school and work in Toronto, making cycling safer is increasingly important, and so the news today that Ontario’s chief coroner is planning to review cycling deaths between 2006 and 2010 is very welcome. • Fauja Singh, the 100-year-old marathon runner who grabbed headlines after finishing this year’s Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon, won’t get a Guinness World Record for his feat of endurance. Because he can’t produce a birth certificate stating his birth year as 1911, even though he has a passport and a letter from the Queen that say as much, the grumps at Guinness won’t give him the distinction. And, so, we hereby bestow upon Singh the Torontoist World Record for Coolest Guy Ever.
  • It’s been out since May, but Mobile Fringe’s Toronto PATH App flew under our radar until Metro Morning tweeted it today. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a retail-focused iPhone app that helps you navigate Toronto’s underground PATH system, with a searchable store directory and an interactive map that tells you where you are and helps you reach your destination. And, yep, it’s free.
