Urban Planner: September 6, 2011

In today's Urban Planner: attend the launch of a new website about women in politics; Toronto Public Space Initiative is organizing a protest over the potential sale of naming rights for public sites; the collective Tones of Voice is unveiling a show based on autistic teenager Birger Sellin's poetry book; and four acts are set to hit the stage for Nu Music Nite at the Horseshoe.

FUNDRAISER: Canada lags behind countries worldwide in terms of the number of women involved in politics. Two young Canadians want to change that, so they created FundHer.ca, an online hub and donation site that can connect you with female candidates running in the upcoming provincial election. Tonight, they are officially launching the site with an event and panel that will feature MPPs of various political stripes. Merchandise Building Rooftop Lounge (155 Dalhousie Street), 5:30 p.m.–8 p.m., FREE.

PROTEST: The City is considering selling the naming rights for various Toronto locations, including parks and subway stations. The Toronto Public Space Initiative is against the plan and has organized a rally tonight—the day that the City Manager is to report back on the idea to the Executive Committee—to protest. Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen Street West), 6:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m., FREE.

ART: Birger Sellin, a German autistic mute teenager, became a published author with the help of facilitated communication. His first work, I Don’t Want to Be Inside Me Anymore: Messages from Autistic Mind, was translated into multiple languages for audiences around the world. New collective Tones of Voice—comprised of Threshold Theatre’s Mark Cassidy and New Adventures in Sound Art’s Darren Copeland—is debuting besidemyselfworld, a multidisciplinary solo piece based on Sellin’s work. The exhibit runs until September 11. The Artscape Wychwood Barns (601 Christie Street), 8 p.m., $5–$10.

MUSIC: The Horseshoe Tavern has a full lineup at tonight’s Edge 102.1 Dave Bookman’s Nu Music Nite. Set to hit the stage are Poor Young Things, Wagons, The Young Evils, and Samantha Savage Smith. The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West), 9 p.m., FREE.
