Today in Toronto: stop by a dance performance in the newly renamed Young People's Theatre, Type Books is hosting a book launch and stitch-and-bitch, a famous musical is relived through the eyes of youth in Mumbai, and the Cubadors are rocking out at The Avro.
DANCE: Young People’s Theatre has a shiny new name—it was formerly known as the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People—and it’s ready to kick of its 2011/12 season with a multimedia dance project. The first show of the year is The Studio, which has dancers exploring visual art in a paint-splattered artist’s studio. Performances run until October 6 and are appropriate for kids five and up. Young People’s Theatre (165 Front Street East), 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., $15–$20.
LITERATURE: Get those stitching fingers ready for tonight’s launch party for the book HOOPLA: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery. Leanne Prain, who has also authored Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti, will celebrate her new work at Type Books as part of an informal stitch-and-bitch, so bring along your own in-progress project. Type Books (883 Queen Street West), 6 p.m.–8 p.m., FREE.
FILM: Many of us have fond memories of watching The Sound of Music, but tonight’s screening at the ROM showcases a deeper attachment to the famous musical. The Sound of Mumbai: A Musical is about a group of children from the slums of Mumbai who are recruited to perform the classic work with an orchestra for one night only. A Q&A with Human Rights Watch senior researcher Bede Sheppard will follow the screening. Royal Ontario Museum, Signy and Cléophée Eaton Theatre (100 Queen’s Park), 7 p.m., $8–$12.
MUSIC: If your Tuesday could use a little more rock (and we all know that most Tuesdays could), head to The Avro tonight to catch the Cubadors. The local band will play music from its upcoming collection, City Down/City Now. The Avro (750b Queen Street East), 9 p.m.–11 p.m., FREE.
