Urban Planner: September 21, 2011
In today's Urban Planner: stop by a play about the early days of the vibrator, catch the opening of a rock musical about teenage angst, and visit the Gladstone Hotel's newly reopened Melody Bar, which is featuring music by Light Fires and DJ Phil V.
THEATRE: Tarragon Theatre is kicking off its 2011/12 season with the Canadian premiere of In the Next Room or the vibrator play, which was nominated for both a Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize. The Sarah Ruhl play—which runs until October 23—is about the early history of the vibrator and stars Trish Lindström, Melody A. Johnson, and David Storch. Tarragon Theatre (30 Bridgman Avenue), 8 p.m., $20–$47.
THEATRE: Sadly, this week is the official end of summer, so it seems like a mean trick that a rock musical opening today is called Spring Awakening. The inaugural season of the Lower Ossington Theatre will kick off with the Tony Award–winning musical, which features an alternative rock score by Duncan Sheik. The musical follows a group of teenagers as they face coming-of-age challenges in late 19th century Germany. The Lower Ossington Theatre (100A Ossington Avenue), 8 p.m., $45–$65.
MUSIC: The Gladstone Hotel’s Melody Bar recently got a makeover, and the newly redesigned space officially re-launched on Monday. In celebration of the relaunch, Melody Bar is hosting a week of events with music, drinks, and prizes. Tonight, Light Fires and DJ Phil V will put in appearances as part of a queer-focused evening of music. Gladstone Hotel Melody Bar (1214 Queen Street West), 10 p.m., FREE.
