Urban Planner: August 3, 2011

Urban Planner is Torontoist‘s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

In today’s Urban Planner: if you have about 12 hours to spare, you can watch Kevin Schmidt’s full film, Epic Journey; check out an art installation at Yonge-Dundas Square that kicks off a human trafficking–awareness campaign; and grab a blanket and sit under the stars while watching Jagte Raho, a Raj Kapoor classic.

FILM: Start carb loading this morning if you want to be ready for this film marathon. Today, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery will host a screening of Kevin Schmidt’s 11.5-hour film, Epic Journey. The film is about two parallel journeys: Schmidt’s aboard a boat drifting on British Columbia’s Fraser River and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is screened on board Schmidt’s boat. The film “tests the limits of his viewers, pushes the context of the films, and brings together these two epic journeys in a mash-up of the real and the fantastical.” There will be couches, snacks, and air conditioning for those willing to partake in this long journey. Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (7 Hart House Circle), 9:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m., FREE.
AWARENESS ART: Human trafficking is a very real problem not only abroad but right here in Canada too. Today is the launch of a new human trafficking–awareness campaign called Unveiling the Myths. Head to Yonge-Dundas Square to visit a maze-like art installation that kicks off the campaign and speaks to the realities of this international issue. Yonge-Dundas Square (1 Dundas Street East), 11:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m., FREE.
FILM: It’s August already (sigh), which means summer won’t be with us for much longer. Take advantage while you still can and catch an outdoor film screening tonight at David Pecaut Square. Coinciding with the Raj Kapoor retrospective at TIFF Bell Lightbox, TIFF will be playing Jagte Raho, a 1956 film produced by and starring Kapoor about a poor villager moving to a city in search of a better life. David Pecaut Square (55 John Street), 8:30 p.m., FREE.
