In today’s Urban Planner: catch an evening of dance outside at Withrow Park; actor Tim Robbins brings his band to Toronto to promote their new album; no need to watch TV tonight when you can catch live comedy pilots on stage; and Joseph Arthur hits the Dakota Tavern on his tour.

DANCE: As the sun goes down, an eclectic group of professional artists will take to the outdoor stage tonight at Withrow Park with contemporary and traditional dance performances. The Dusk Dances feature works by Karen Kaeja, Throwdown Collective, Michael Caldwell, the Contingency Plan, and Lua Shayenne and Roshanak Jaberi. The dances run every night until Sunday, and more Dusk Dances performances take place August 18 to 21 at Earlscourt Park. Withrow Park (725 Logan Avenue), 7 p.m., PWYC.
MUSIC: You likely know him as an Academy Award–winning actor and director, but Tim Robbins recently released his first album. Tonight, Tim Robbins and the Rogues Gallery Band will make a stop in Toronto to play songs from the debut at the Mod Club. Mod Club Theatre (722 College Street), 7 p.m., $29.50.
COMEDY: Think pilots are only for television? Not so, says Insight Productions, which is hosting the second annual pilot week. The six-day festival features four performances per night of live half-hour comedies that are intended for television. On finale night, the top three finalists will perform, with the winner being awarded $1,000 and the chance for a development deal. Comedy Bar (945 Bloor Street West), August 2–6, 7–10 p.m. (shows on the hour), FREE.
MUSIC: Brooklyn painter and singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur hits Toronto tonight and tomorrow in support of his most recent album, The Graduation Ceremony. It’s Arthur’s first solo album in two years, after releasing a group album with the band Fistful of Mercy, comprised of Arthur, Ben Harper, and Dhani Harrison. The Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), 7–10 p.m., $22.50.

CORRECTION: August 2, 2011, 8:45 PM This post originally indicated that the Dusk Dances at Withrow Park would include performances by “local youth and emerging artists.” In fact, the production will feature professional dancers only.
