Urban Planner: August 22, 2011

In today's Urban Planner: pen a note with other writers at the PAL-SAC meeting; be a gentleman (or lady) caller who drops in on Soulpepper's The Glass Menagerie; see local bands from the Reason for Hope compilation CD play live, in support of cancer research; and play bingo (and win prizes) among the oddballs at Bingo: the Show.

WRITING: The bi-monthly Post A Letter Social Activity Club (and, in this instance, we mean twice a month) meets tonight, with locally made postcards, stationery, and writing supplies made available to attending handwriting scribes, all at PWYC prices. Naco Gallery Cafe (1665 Dundas Street West), 7 p.m., PWYC.
THEATRE: Soulpepper’s production of Tennessee Williams’ classic play The Glass Menagerie opened on the same day as the Fringe Festival, and we’ve been so wrapped up in our festival coverage (including the recent SummerWorks Festival) that it’s escaped mention ’til now. And that’s a shame, as the production, which boasts a commendable cast and original music compositions by director Ted Dykstra, has garnered magnificent reviews and has just a half-dozen performances left in its run—including tonight’s. Young Centre for the Arts (55 Mill Street), 7:30 p.m, $45–$65 ($5–$22 rush tickets, one hour before show.)
BENEFIT: Tonight’s Reason For Hope concert, benefiting breast cancer research, is packed with local music talent, including Crush Luther, Robyn Dell’Unto, and Mary Stewart. Stewart’s mother was diagnosed with metastasic breast cancer last year, prompting a compilation album (and this benefit show) to raise funds for cancer research. The show’s attractions will also include a silent auction—and a band-member kissing booth. The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West), Doors at 8 p.m., $6.
COMEDY: A crowd favourite at the 2009 Toronto Fringe Festival, Bingo: The Show returns for one night only with its full cast, including the cantankerous Harvey, who’s never won a game in 73 years. Hosted by “Dot” Winters (local comic Megan Fraser), the show consists of a mix of planned and improvised comedy, but also, “actual bingo, with actual prizes!” Comedy Bar (945 Bloor Street West), 9 p.m., $8.
