Urban Planner: August 17, 2011

Today in Toronto: you can reminisce about the wrestling-watching days of your youth with a documentary about Bret "the Hitman" Hart; indie and comedy join forces for an hour of laughs and entertainment; and Danish punk rockers Iceage are in town.

FILM: You may not be willing to admit it to all your friends, but you probably tuned in at least once or twice (or maybe a hundred times in the wee morning hours) to watch professional wrestling back in its heyday, when it was still called the WWF. If you did, you’ll certainly remember Canadian wrestler Bret “The Hitman” Hart. As part of NFB Mediatheque’s Free Favourites at Four series, today you can check out a documentary all about Bret called Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows. NFB Mediatheque (150 John Street), 4 p.m., FREE.

COMEDY: If comedy is your thing, there are always lots of options around the city. One of the newer additions to the scene is Toronto’s Indie Comedy Hour. Tonight’s lineup includes Camille Cote, Pat McDonald, Daniela Saioni, Steph Tolev, and Shelley Marshall, and it will be followed by an open mic. No One Writes To The Colonel (460 College Street), 8 p.m., PWYC.

MUSIC: Punk rockers Iceage are stopping in Toronto tonight to promote their debut album, New Brigade. The group of Danish teenagers have received praise for the album, with reviews claiming it hit a “punk-rock sweet spot: mixing the black atmosphere of goth, the wild-limbed whoosh of hardcore, and the clangor of post-punk.” Parts and Labour (1566 Queen Street West), 10 p.m., $10.
