Scene: Blackout Anniversary Party

A projection on the outside of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church at 12 Denison Avenue, near Queen. Photo by Martinho from the Torontoist Flickr Pool.

WHERE: Queen Street, between Spadina Avenue and Bathurst Street.
WHEN: Last night, from 8 to 11 p.m.
WHAT: If you weren’t on Queen Street last night for this year’s Blackout Anniversary Party, the above photo and the video below will give you a sense of what you missed. Each year for the past eight years, various groups have hosted an on-street celebration commemorating the 2003 blackout when some Toronto residents partied in the streets, made new friends, and discovered how much fun they could have without electricity.
This year’s participants included Streets are for People!, the Fedora Upsidedown collective, and the Urban Repair Squad; music was provided by Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Samba Elegua, and Rambunctious, among others. People stopped and gathered on Denison Avenue at Queen, what some were calling Schmatta Square; you will hear that discussed in the video.
