  • City of Toronto Fire Services has been awarded the 2011 International Tony Pini Award for “Diversity and Inclusion in the Fire Service” by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Fire 20/20, which is an international non-profit that connects fire and emergency medical services with local multicultural communities. Its aim is to to improve diversity recruitment and retention, emergency response, and community risk reduction programs. Toronto Fire Services was selected specifically for its partnership with Centennial College to increase diversity in its Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program.
  • TIFF 2011 is next month and the buzz over this year’s films is well underway. But who chose those films? No need to wonder, because there exists on the interweb a page full of profiles of TIFF 2011 programmers, with whom you can acquaint yourself and praise (or curse) their choices at your leisure.
  • This story’s been a popular one with Torontonians online today, but in case you missed it: Guardian writer Anna Soper has declared that the removal of bike lanes in the city marks the official start of Toronto’s “war on cycling.” Great! It seems like that other war just ended, and now we’ve started another.
  • TedxToronto has announced its featured speakers for its conference this September, and right at the top of the list is former mayor David Miller, who will announce he’s returning to City Hall to save us probably talk about creating sustainable urban economies, since that’s his specialty these days. Other feature speakers include U of T professor and nanotechnology expert Ted Sargent and Jeff Melanson, National Ballet School executive director and Rob Ford’s special adviser on the arts.
