Chemical Spill Closes Charles Street
The CBC is reporting that the area around 50 Charles Street East (that’s south of Bloor Street, between Yonge and Church streets) has been closed off while fire and emergency crews investigate a chemical leak that took place in a Canada Post office. The chemical is suspected to be nitrogen triiodide, which is extremely explosive. The size of the leak has not yet been reported, and neither has its cause. [Update 8:55 p.m.: The CBC is now reporting that the spill took place during a science class at a nearby YMCA. Emergency crews say the situation poses no threat to public safety.]
