In today’s Urban Planner: visit day one of an exhibition about the changing Don Valley landscape; eat and chat about the arts funding situation in Toronto; attend a book launch for a great summer read; and get in the Caribbean Carnival mood with the Calypso Stars Showcase.

ART: The Don Valley Art Club, the City of Toronto’s Museum Services, and local artists unveil a new exhibition tonight called “Views Along the Don.” The show runs from today until September 4 and features 90 pieces of art about the changing Don Valley landscape. The exhibition will also include historical art and photographs from the City of Toronto’s collection. Papermill Gallery at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site (67 Pottery Road), 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., FREE.
TALK: Join a conversation and (vegan) dinner tonight about the current climate for arts funding, including the recent funding cut to the Toronto SummerWorks Theatre Festival, as part of Toronto Free Gallery’s Bridge Series. Visual artist and Mayworks Festival director Florencia Berinstein will moderate the discussion, which will feature three speakers, including the executive director of Trinity Square Video, Roy Mitchell; artist and producer of SummerWorks, Michael Rubenfeld; and artist and current director of programming at the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film and Video Festival, Jason St-Laurent. RSVP to reserve your spot. Toronto Free Gallery (1277 Bloor Street West), 7 p.m., $15.
LITERATURE: Beach season is here, so get ready for your day of sun and sand (and swimming?) by grabbing a copy of The Chairs Are Where the People Go—one of the top five books for beach reading according to New York Magazine—at its launch party tonight. Authors Misha Glouberman and Sheila Heti will take part in a short interview with Carl Wilson at the event. The book has received lots of positive reviews and has been called the “self-help book for people who don’t feel they need help, and a how-to book that urges you to do things you don’t really need to do.” The Garrison (1197 Dundas Street West), 7 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: It’s almost Toronto Caribbean Carnival parade time, so get in the mood tonight with the Calypso Stars Showcase. The event features two-and-a-half hours of calypso, steelpan, and mas’ hosted by local author Itah Sadu. The house band for the night is award-winning producer Ossie Gurley & The Truth. Harboufront Centre (235 Queens Quay West), 7:30 p.m., FREE.
