Urban Planner: July 12, 2011
Urban Planner is Torontoist‘s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].
Today in Toronto: jump up and head out to the official launch of the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival; get your Woody Allen fix at a free outdoor movie by the water; listen to Low Level Flight at a free show at the Horseshoe; and take advantage of the Fringe Festival’s last six days.
LAUNCH: The newly renamed Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto officially launches this year’s festival at Nathan Phillips Square at lunchtime. The parade is still more two weeks away, but today’s event will give you a taste of what’s to come with speeches, musical performances, and dancers in Mas costumes. Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen Street West), 12:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m., FREE.
FILM: The warm summer weather has Torontonians flocking outside for all sorts of activities and fun. One way to enjoy that time outdoors on a weekday evening is by catching one of the free outdoor movies that take place all around town. Tonight, you can head to the Harbourfront Centre for the Longo’s Free Flicks outdoor film series, which showcases movies that explore urban centres through the eyes of the filmmaker or main characters. You can take a peek at New York City this evening, through Woody Allen’s film Annie Hall. Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West), 9:00 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Low Level Flight recently welcomed two new members to the group, and they play their first show in Toronto with the new additions tonight. The alternative-rock group’s most recent album, Through These Walls, was released in 2011 and the first single, “Cash Machine,” has seen lots of success so far. The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West), 10:00 p.m., FREE.
FRINGE: Want to see more of what Fringe has to offer? Check out our preview to track down the best of the fest.
