Suspicious Package Found at MPP Glen Murray’s Office, Emergency Crews on Scene
HAPPENING NOW A suspicious package filled with “white powder” was discovered this afternoon in the office of MPP Glen Murray (Toronto Centre), and emergency crews are now on scene to investigate. Just after 2:30 p.m., Xtra! reporter Andrea Houston tweeted “A suspicious package filled w white powder found at Parliament & Winchester in Cabbagetown,” and, shortly after, “Emergency crews are responding and @glen4tc’s office is cordoned off with police tape.” Houston saw EMS staff treating some people at the scene and police officers questioning others. Just before 3:30 p.m., Houston wrote that she saw fire crews setting up a tent, preparing to move into the office to remove the package, while Murray had just arrived and was “emotional and very concerned about his staff.”
Just before 4 p.m., Houston noted that police on scene won’t speculate about what’s in the package, and, for that matter, neither will we. But we will update this post as more information becomes available.
Thankfully, it seems that the contents of the package were not as sinister as people on scene had initially suspected. That said, police are interested in tracking down the person who sent it. Just before 5 p.m., Houston wrote: “Just spoke to @TorontoPolice Sgt Chris May who confirmed the package was innocuous. Not harmful. He would not say what the substance is” and “Sgt May also says there is a person of interest, but wouldn’t confirm if the person is in custody.”
