Councillors Kick Colleague Janet Davis Out of Meeting

City hall is a busy place these days. While we were busy at the Public Works committee meeting yesterday, learning about potential cuts to City services, over in another meeting room the Civic Appointments committee was convening to discuss other affairs. Things, it seems, got heated and culminated in the committee’s chair, Frances Nunziata (Ward 11, York South-Weston) calling a vote—which passed unanimously—ordering visiting councillor Janet Davis (Ward 31, Beaches-East York) out of the room. (Davis was “visiting” because she is not a member of that particular committee. Councillors who are not members of a given committee are still allowed to attend and speak at that committee’s meetings.) This marks the first time City Hall observers can recall a councillor getting ejected from a meeting. The decision was taken, said committee member Giorgio Mammoliti, because “Certain councillors like to bully councillors around, Janet Davis is one of them.”
