  • Praxis Theatre has put out an unusual casting call for the SummerWorks play You Should Have Stayed Home. Written by Tommy Taylor, the production recounts his experience during Toronto’s G20 weekend, when he was arrested and detained. The theatre is looking for 40 male volunteers willing to be crammed together to recreate the conditions in the Eastern Avenue detention centre last June.
  • Commons is an iPhone app and “civic game” that challenges New York City residents to think of ways to improve their neighbourhoods and also lets them vote on each other’s ideas. The resulting data will be shared with the people at NYC 311 to help them identify and fix the city’s most pressing problems. Challenge to local programmers: Toronto needs one too, right?
  • While today the City started releasing recommendations based on findings from its service review, aiming to rein in spending, John McGrath’s newest post on his blog argues in favour of one source of revenues, high parking rates, which he argues are a sign of a healthy city.
  • Werner Herzog: the Canadian film-goer’s choice? Herzog’s newest film, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, was the highest-grossing film per screen in Canada this past weekend and also set a record for the highest-grossing opening weekend yet for the TIFF Bell Lightbox (which, mind you, has only been open for less than a year). Cave is currently playing exclusively at the Lightbox and is distributed in Canada by Kinosmith, who made the announcement.
