Extra, Extra: The Worst in Sports, and the Best in Film

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • ESPN has named Toronto the worst city for pro sports in North America. But, no, they didn’t stop there. They ranked the Leafs as the worst team in the NHL, the Raptors the third worst in the NBA, and the Jays the fourth worst in Major League Baseball. Kinda sounds like a dare, Toronto sports supporters. Time to show ’em what we’ve got? [via @shot7news]
  • Will Mayor Ford’s push to deregulate Toronto make it more fun? That’s the question asked by this Star article from the weekend. As that story (sort of) notes, the “Toronto is no fun” discussion was kicked up recently by Alex Molotkow’s story for Toronto Standard, “Toronto and the Problem of Fun,” which is worth a read.
  • Recognizing his contributions to the Canadian film industry over the past five decades, the Toronto Film Critics Association has named John Dunning the recipient of its 2011 Clyde Gilmour Award. Since the 1960s, Dunning has supported the emerging careers of some of today’s greatest Canadian filmmakers—including David Cronenberg, Ivan Reitman, and Denys Arcand—through his company Cinepix. The Clyde Gilmour Award recognizes Canadians “whose work has in some way enriched the understanding and appreciation of film in their native country.”
  • There’s rarely a day when he doesn’t shoot at least one picture, and, somewhat cryptically, he reveals, “My favourite places to shoot are the places I haven’t yet been.”
