Case Ootes Recommends Sale of 900 TCHC Homes
TCHC Case Ootes, who is about to end his term as the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s one-man board, is urging the TCHC to sell off “as many as” all 900 of its houses. Ootes called a press conference today to announce his plan to raise money for the TCHC’s highrise-maintenance backlog, which is estimated to be nearly $650-million worth of repairs. It’s unclear how much the sale of all of 900 homes would raise (as we reported late last month, no one was sure how much the sale of even 22 TCHC units would raise or how many residents would be affected). According to the Star, Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27, Toronto Centre-Rosedale) criticized the move, calling Ootes a “lame duck” with “no political currency.” TCHC chief executive Len Koroneos has already endorsed the idea, but city council will appoint a new TCHC board next week, and they will decide whether to move ahead with the proposal.
