Urban Planner: May 20, 2011
Urban Planner is Torontoist‘s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

In today’s Urban Planner: the Pirates want you to bike with them to an outdoor screening (and keep an eye on your wheels); Sky Gilbert waxes poetic about his momma; the Daft Punk Tribute gives the French duo the big band treatment; the Samba Squad plays the LulaWorld Festival; and Gong the Show bangs for itself.
FILM: The Bike Pirates have planned a leisurely ride this evening from their base of operations to Trinity Bellwoods Park, where they’ve arranged for an outdoor screening of the classic Italian film The Bicycle Thief. All are welcome (even pedestrians). Bike Pirates (1292 Bloor Street West) -> Trinity Bellwoods Park Dog Bowl, 7:30 p.m. ride, 9 p.m. screening, FREE.
THEATRE: Groundbreaking queer-theatre creator Sky Gilbert is performing a new solo poetry show, The Mommiad, tonight, and it’s all about his relationship with his mother. Buddies In Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander Street), 8 p.m, PWYC.
MUSIC: The members of the Daft Punk Tribute, inspired by the mysterious robot-headed French duo, have collaborated on a music and light show extravaganza for tonight; the band features 9 members (many of them graduates of Humber College’s prestigious Jazz program), and there will be a light show designed by Luchi Design. Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor Street West), doors at 9 p.m., $12.
MUSIC: As part of this year’s Lulaworld Festival, The Samba Squad, a large percussive ensemble inspired by traditional Brazilian music, is playing two sets tonight at the popular world-music hotspot. Lula Lounge (1595 Dundas Street West) , shows at 10 p.m. & midnight, $13.
COMEDY: Gong the Show‘s had all sorts of wacky, creative, and just plain gross acts on their bill over the past year, but now it looks like the rogues gallery of judges (Scott Yakamura, Glenn Macaulay, and Andy Hull) are retiring their wigs and the show’s titular instrument. For the (likely) final show, past favourites like Jon Blair, Kathleen Phillips, and Greg Cochrane will try to top their past shenanigans tonight. Comedy Bar (945 Bloor Street West), 10:30 p.m., $5.
