Spotted: Bisected Boat on the Rocks
WHERE: The shores of Humber Bay Park West.
WHEN: 10:43 a.m., today.
WHAT: A boat, labelled with “Turkey Point, Ont.,” a town on the northern shore of Lake Erie, which could explain the vessel’s battered state. If the boat started its journey there, it could have gone over the Niagara Falls along the way.
It’s not clear how long it’s been since the boat made its landing at Humber Bay Park. According to Christopher Drost, it wasn’t there in December, when he last visited the area.
Drost describes the boat in more detail: “The whole front frame is missing and someone has taken a reciprocating saw to various parts of it—perhaps for the fiberglass. Kind of like the accident-scene photos you see after the fire department has used the jaws of life to rip a car apart.” He speculates, because of the cut marks, that someone damaged the boat purposely, either before or after it came ashore, but also enjoys imagining Humber Bay Park as the last stop on a long journey. “I just love the real plausible idea that from Turkey Point it got pulled into the Niagara River, made it over the falls, through the whirlpool, jetted out into the lake, and floated straight across and ended up magically here.” Us too.
