Oh is it still raining? Then it must be Thursday, huh?! In the news this grey Thursday: the SIU and police spokesman have a war of words in the Star, councillors are lining up for the new TCHC board, online dating is still scary, and studies show immigrants are lazy.

The reign of Case Ootes is nearly over (though not soon enough), and councillors are lining up to sit on the new board of the Toronto Community Housing Corp. The four councillors who were on the board before it was bulldozed by council want back on, along with four members of the mayor’s executive committee. Since the mayor gets to appoint one of the four members, it’s probably a safe bet we’ll be seeing either Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), Norm Kelly (Ward 40, Scarborough Agincourt), Cesar Palacio (Ward 17, Davenport), or Jaye Robinson (Ward 25, Don Valley West) on the new board.
In other unsurprising news of the day, members of the police union voted in favour of giving themselves an 11 per cent raise. Of course they did.
And speaking of the boys and girls in blue, it turns out one of those officers who claimed they couldn’t identify the cop photographed “aggressively taking down” Dorian Barton during the G20 was the suspect’s roommate for the weekend. Of course he was. Watch as the head of the Special Investigations Unit and police spokesman Mark Pugash duke it out in this Toronto Star article that reveals the roommate twist to an already twisted tale.
Some other people are getting around to telling you what we could have told you days ago: cyclists and pedestrians get hit by cars a lot in Toronto.
You know when you bring a date to a party and some friend of yours jokes, “How did you guys meet? On Match.com?” And you’re not sure if they’re genuinely guessing which online dating site it was or if you’re supposed to laugh and pretend you’re not one of those nerds who needs the internet to meet people? Well, there are a few reasons people still feel weird about admitting to online dating, and murderers rank pretty high amongst those reasons. The OPP now suspects that an Orangeville nurse who was found murdered late last year met her killer on Plenty Of Fish. Be careful out there, internet kiddies.
And perpetuating the myth that immigrants and poor people are lazy, a new study shows that the children of foreign-born and low-income parents are far less likely to participate in school sports or fitness activities outside of school. Blah blah blah, it costs too much. Blah blah blah, immigrant parents are too busy trying to establish themselves in a new country to drive their kids around to soccer tournaments. Whatever, immigrants and poor people. Get it together.
