Hot Docs Planner: Set-ups, Long-boarding and Way Extended Families

Hey dude, cool longboard……………………………………………..not.

Usually we hate Mondays more than some weird crossbreed of Garfield and Cathy, but today is different. Because today is election day in Canada. So go to the polls and cast your ballot, already. Democracy itself depends on it. And what finer manifestation of democracy than the freedom to select which documentaries you’re going to see in a day? And to nudge you in the right direction, Saira Peesker, Carly Maga, and John Semley have selected some of the better films unspooling today at Hot Docs.
In the spirit of politics and democracy and what-have-you, you may want to see Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega’s Better This World ( 3 1/2 STARS ), which parses the dicey ethics of two arrests during the Republican National Convention a few years ago. And if you like orphans, you’ll love Family Portrait in Black and White ( 3 1/2 STARS ), which follows a Ukrainian woman who provides a home for mixed-race kids, many of whom are given up at birth in the Ukraine. If, for some reason, you don’t adhere to the “longboards are the wrong-boards” truism, you may like Highway Gospel ( 3 1/2 STARS ), a study in the zen of longboarding.
