Hot Docs Planner: Football and Cheering, Hooray!

Pink frilly pom-poms: they’re not just for little girls anymore, apparently!

Happy May! And a merry Hot Doc day! As Hot Docs 2011 rolls along and the documentaries keep coming. And as a continued public service (and because, like, it’s our jobs) we’re here to recommend some of the best ones screening. We’re not over-the-moon ga-ga about anything screening today, but Kiva Reardon and Ryan West have some solid picks for your perusal.
First up is James Newton’s “touching” Boy Cheerleaders ( 4 STARS ). It’s like Billy Elliot! But with many Billy Elliots! And in keeping with the sports theme (because if we learned anything from the Bring It On films, it’s that cheering is for sure a sport), Sunday also sees Patrick Reed’s The Team ( 4 STARS ), the story of soccer in Kenya. Or rather, the story of a soap opera (also called The Team) about soccer in Kenya. So there you have it, sportos. But on your best sporting team logo ball cap and go see a movie!
