Extra, Extra: Considering an Edgewalk and a Grid Box on the Sidewalk
Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.
- Acrophobics, avert your eyes. The CN Tower announced today that it will be offering a new experience to visitors, called Edgewalk, in which brave souls will harness up, venture out onto a ledge at the top of the tower, and spend 30 minutes or so
wondering how long it takes to fall 1,168 feetenjoying the view. Tickets for the attraction are reportedly available starting June 1 and will go for $175. - Fans of author Naomi Klein are familiar with the idea she presented in her book the Shock Doctrine: governments use calamities (often sharp economic declines, wars, or natural disasters) to push through sweeping legislative change that has implications far beyond dealing with the crisis at hand. Could it be that the governing style of our mayor and the campaign that got him elected are based on such a principle? Simon Black thinks so.
- Toronto said bye to Eye last week, and this Thursday, The Grid will rise, like a “younger, hipper, more provocative version of Toronto Life” phoenix, from its former alt-weekly, escort-ads-included ashes. It’s already been spotted, in box form, by former Torontoist editor David Topping on Queen Street West, which is where all the young, hip publications hang out.
- The West-End Food Co-op, who advocate for local food security and host cool events like the Sorauren Farmers’ Market and canning and preserving workshops, have been looking for a space to host a sustainable food hub in Parkdale—and they’ve found. it. The group will open its local food store in the lower level of the Parkdale Community Health Centre by the end of the year. Learn more about it and fundraising efforts underway to make it happen here.
