Extra, Extra: Bixi Explained, Smashbomb Accepted, and OCAD U Redesigned

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • Someone would’ve had to be hiding under a rock all this week to miss all the news about Bixi’s launch in Toronto. But some aspiring riders could still be unclear about how Bixi works, exactly. Luckily, Ryan Carter, an Australian TV host currently living in Toronto and a fan of the public bike-sharing program, created the above video⎯without payment from Bixi, we should add⎯to explain exactly that.
  • The idea started here, after ignorant and hurtful remarks by a Toronto police officer, but now SlutWalks are happening in the U.S., too. Our American friends in Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, Reno, and Austin are all planning to host walks soon.
  • A while ago we told you about Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery‘s troubles with the LCBO. Now, after a grassroots campaign by Flying Monkeys fans and after the brewery re-submitted Smashbomb with revisions, the LCBO has accepted their Smashbomb beer, after initially rejecting it due to its name.
  • Since adding that “U” to its widely recognized four-letter acronym, OCAD University has maybe been struggling with its brand a little. To remedy that, the school teamed up with Bruce Mau Design to re-imagine its visual identity. This includes a new logo, based on the concept of a window, that will be continually modified to incorporate elements designed by OCAD U students.
