Extra, Extra: Vote, Cycle, Explore, and Prepare to Be Prepared

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • In the above video, comedy writer and host of Rogers TV’s Truth Mashup Dan Speerin and his friends remind ethnic voters (gingers included?) to VOTE. If you’re still feeling meh about the whole thing, watch their “PSA Against Apathy,” or watch Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi’s inspirational get-out-the-vote video. Finally, if you still have some unanswered questions about the parties’ platforms or want to know more about your riding, head over to our federal politics hub before your last-minute sprint to a polling station this evening.
  • Could cycling in Toronto get a lot easier during Rob Ford’s time in office? That’s the wacky idea Marcus Gee explores in this article, which notes the bike-trail plan Ford promised to fund while campaigning, as well as the proposal from his head of public works, Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East), to create a network of separated bike lanes in the downtown core. A city council committee will consider both proposals in June. Gee notes, hopefully: “It took a Communist-fighter like Richard Nixon to go to China, it might take a bike skeptic like Mr. Ford to make progress on cycling in Toronto.”
  • For people curious about our city’s usually shuttered interiors, Doors Open Toronto is a highly anticipated event each year. Doors Open is happening the weekend of May 28 and 29 this year, and it’s taking on a photographic theme, featuring photography exhibitions and access to studios that are usually closed to the public. The list of this year’s participating venues is now online.
  • Launching an awareness week during a federal election is a tough chore, but there’s really no ideal time to prepare for an emergency. That’s what the City wants to remind Toronto residents to do, with its Emergency Preparedness Week website and campaign, which began yesterday and ends May 7.
