Urban Planner: April 27, 2011
Urban Planner is Torontoist‘s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

Today in Toronto: a book event in honour of mothers, a musical fundraiser for inner-city youths, a literary launch with its very own “Missed Connections” for book lovers, and spontaneous roaming music at the Royal Conservatory.
LITERATURE: With Mother’s Day not far away (let this serve as your reminder to start planning), World Literacy Canada is hosting an evening of readings and discussions dedicated to mothers as part of its Kama 2011 Reading Series. Authors Dawn Promislow, Andrea Gunraj, Jamie Zeppa, and Neil Pasricha will showcase their respective works. Book signings will take place after each reading. Tickets available online or by phone. Park Hyatt Toronto (4 Avenue Road), 6:30 p.m., $60 (with $30 tax receipt).
FUNDRAISER: Support a great cause tonight at the Steam Whistle Brewery by checking out Crescendo! Getting Loud in support of the Regent Park School of Music. The evening of music will feature the talents of Jim Creeggan, one quarter of Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, along with aspiring musicians from the school. Regent Park School has a sizeable waiting list for its program, which provides inner-city youths with a safe environment to take part in subsidized music lessons, and the money raised will help provide additional spaces. Tickets can be purchased online or by phone. Steam Whistle Brewery (255 Bremner Boulevard), 6:30–9:30 p.m., $125.
LITERATURE: The Coach House Spring 2011 launch takes place tonight with a full roster featuring many Toronto literary personalities. The launch will feature new novels by Sean Dixon and Suzette Mayr, debut poetry collections by Gabe Foreman and Helen Guri, and a poetry re-issue of work by Daniel Jones. Dress your best if you also happen to be a book lover looking for love; attendees can participate in the event’s theme, “book lust,” with Coach House’s very own “Missed Connections” box. Revival (783 College Street), 8 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: “An interactive evening of music” is the best way to describe the Royal Conservatory‘s Mozart Unlaced fundraiser. The event, which celebrates the RCM’s Glenn Gould School and Young Artists Performance Academy, will include “spontaneous roaming performances,” a special appearance by the Cecilia String Quartet, and an instrument petting zoo, where attendees can try the instruments and see if they have a future in music. TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning (273 Bloor Street West), 8–11 p.m. $100–$250 (with $175 tax receipt) or $100 for young patrons (30 and under).
