TTC Scraps Discounted Metropasses for Part-Time Students
The TTC Commission has decided to stop giving part-time students discounted Metropasses as of September this year. As we previously reported, a proposal to make part-time students ineligible for discounted Metropasses was on the table at today’s meeting. For the 2010–2011 school year, both full- and part-time students could apply for the post-secondary Metropass, allowing them to save $240 a year on their transportation costs. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told us recently that the change was being considered due to “significant budget pressures.” Accounts of impassioned deputations at the meeting were posted on Twitter. Toby Whitfield, president of the Ryerson Students’ Union, tweeted about a lack of consultation, and at least one full-time student spoke up for his part-time peers.
