Extra, Extra: Urban Design on Film, Hume on Malls
Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.
- Watch above as filmmaker Gary Hustwit talks about his new urban-focused documentary, Urbanized. Hustwit, known for popular docs Helvetica and Objectified, travelled to cities around the world to interview urban design professionals. The film was funded by Kickstarter, a site that collects funding for creative projects from individual donors.
- Over at Spacing Toronto, John Lorinc identifies six councillors who, in his words, comprise a “swing vote bloc.” Lorinc says the votes of the group, which includes Ana Bailão (Ward 18, Davenport) and Josh Colle (Ward 15, Eglinton-Lawrence), cannot be claimed by either the left or the right, and therefore its members wield a disproportionate amount of power—though they may not yet realize it.
- A new online magazine for lit lovers has just launched. Book Madam, the magazine, is a project by Toronto’s Julie Wilson, a.k.a. Book Madam, who is also behind Seen Reading. Wilson and a bevy of contributors, called The Associates, will “collaborate with authors, publishers, and organizers to create interesting and engaging content, in full view of the public.” The site also features reviews of recently published Canadian books.
- The Star‘s Christopher Hume weighed in on Toronto’s five best and five worst malls. Highlights: the Eaton Centre, on Hume’s best list, is “tacky but vital” and Yorkdale, one of the worst, is overcrowded and will make for a “fabulous ruin” one day. Now… debate!
