CMW 2011 Profile: Treelines

From March 9 to 13, Torontoist is covering the crap out of Canadian Music Week, with daily concert and film previews, reviews of the latest action, words with your favourite and soon-to-be-favourite bands, and more.

Unless you’ve seen them in another town, you haven’t seen Vancouver’s Treelines yet—according to guitarist Matt Kelly, their CMW show is their first time in Toronto. Their particular brand of spirited indie rock has caught our ear numerous times on CBC Radio 3: its big, distorted guitars and tuneful ways through roots and post-punk influences make for some truly standout work. You can see them tonight at the Rivoli (334 Queen Street West) at 11 p.m., and before that, you can read this lovely questionnaire.

Torontoist: Why should we see you at CMW?
Matt Kelly (guitarist): Two words: high kicks.
What’s your favourite Toronto venue, and why?
This will be our first time in Toronto, so I suppose by default we’ll say the Rivoli, because that’s where our Music BC showcase is. However, the Horseshoe is legendary and we look forward to playing there in the future.
What’s your favourite Toronto band, and why?
Bahamas! Everything about that dude rules. He’s a great songwriter, great musician, and has great charisma on stage.
What are you excited about seeing/doing and adamant about avoiding at CMW?
We’re really excited for Aidan Knight’s set as well as getting to see all of our other B.C. friends playing at CMW. As far as what we’d like to avoid, the only thing I can think of would be missing out seeing our friends play, but I think we have our schedules all figured out and won’t have to miss much!
What are the best and worst things about these monster-sized music festivals?
I love the atmosphere at big festivals; so many like-minded, music-loving people all in one place, it always feels like a big gathering of friends. The downfall of having so many great artists playing is the inevitable time conflict between the sets you want to watch.
What’s happening for the band after CMW?
We’re playing with Cuff the Duke in London the night after our CMW showcase and then touring back home to Vancouver to play a show with the Dudes at the end of March. After that we’ll start mapping out our tour plans for the next year and hopefully be back to Toronto in the spring!
