Council Approves 2011 Operating Budget

headlesscouncil.jpg    City council voted 32–13 this afternoon to pass the City’s operating budget for 2011—the only year worth talking about, if you ask Councillor and Speaker Frances Nunziata (Ward 11, York South-Weston). As part of that decision, council voted 19–25 not to give the Toronto Public Library the money it needs to keep the branch at Metro Hall open. So while council did not vote to shut down the Urban Affairs Library, today’s vote is very likely to lead to its closure. The decision comes after a rally outside Metro Hall on Tuesday and in spite of a TPL Board decision in January, when it voted against City Librarian Jane Pyper’s proposal to close the branch.
