Funeral services will be held today for Sergeant Ryan Russell, the first Toronto police officer to be killed on duty since 2002. Officers are beginning to line up in formation on University Avenue, and road closures are planned throughout the day, as follows: University is closed as of now, from Queen to College. At 10 a.m., University will be closed for a further stretch south, down to Front Street. University will reopen gradually, starting at College and moving south, as the funeral procession passes through each intersection. Lower Simcoe Street is closed from Front Street to Lakeshore Boulevard West, and Bremner Boulevard closed from York Street to Rees Street, until 6 p.m. tonight. The service begins at 1 p.m. and is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre; it is open to the public, and will also be televised and streamed online.
