Today in Toronto: a new exhibition explores vanity and perfection, the Book Revue looks at the Millennium Trilogy, and a seasonal Simpsons trivia.
ART: Local artist and musician Daniel Ross Botterill turns a scrutinizing eye upon aesthetic obsessions in the gay community in his new exhibition HOWWEDOIT. The selection of interpretive portraits invite the viewer to appraise and evaluate physical paragons, while at the same time critiquing the judgemental gaze. Tonight’s opening party at Everyone is an Artist promises runways, models, and other such tributes to the physical ideal. Everyone is an Artist (289 Queen Street East), 7 p.m., FREE.
FILM: Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson made a global splash on the literary scene with his posthumously published Millennium Trilogy. Tonight’s Book Revue focuses on Niels Arden Oplev’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Swedish-language adaptation of the first book in the series, soon to be recreated for less subtitle-savvy Anglo audiences by David Fincher. As usual the book-to-film club discussion after the screening will be led by Geoff Pevere and include refreshments and confections. Revue Cinema (400 Roncesvalles Avenue), 7 p.m., $8 for members, $10 for non-members.
TRIVIA: Ho ho ho, merry…Line? It’s time for a seasonal Simpsons showdown at the holiday edition of WOO HOO!, a.k.a. Torontoist’s favourite trivia night. The rules are the same—three rounds covering the first eleven seasons, up to six people per team, donut prizes—but with a decidedly festive slant. Come on down and celebrate the birth of Santa with fellow Evergreen Terrace enthusiasts—that is, if you can tear yourself away from Bonestorm and find a sitter for Santa’s Little Helper. Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
