Urban Planner: December 13, 2010

Urban Planner is Torontoist’s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

Today: have lunch while examining fine art, score Leafs tickets with usually useless knowledge, see veteran singer-songwriters guest before weekly showcases at the Drake and Dakota, and watch comics be introduced by an MC who ripped on their sets as a judge last week.

ART: Leave the brown bag at home and head to the Gardiner Museum on your lunch break: art professor Elizabeth Legge is the special guest at a Lunch and Learn lecture entitled Breaking all Boundaries, speaking about viewing (and creating) modern art. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (111 Queens Park), 12–1:30 p.m., $20–$25 (pre-register at gardinermuseum.on.ca).
TRIVIA: Normally, winning at pub trivia gets you little more than the drunken admiration of other patrons. Tonight, the quickest mind and question-responder at quizmaster and DJ Terrance Balazo’s quiz night will win platinum third row tickets to the Toronto Maple Leafs versus Calgary Flames game happening on January 15. Find the pal whose useless knowledge best complements your own and test your skills! Clinton’s Tavern (693 Bloor Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: His songs helped make Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Willie Nelson famous. Tonight, prolific songwriter Chip Taylor guests at the Dakota, backed up by recent Broken Social Scene openers The Beauties. After Taylor’s performance, stick around for the regular residency by the Rattlesnake Choir. Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), 8 p.m., $20 (Rattlesnake Choir at 10:30 p.m., PWYC).
THEATRE: Bob Wiseman (whom we interviewed for our Tranzac Transcripts series), has been touring his show Actionable across Canada this year, telling audiences about his run-ins with lawyers; he tends to speak the truth in his songs in a way that gets him served with cease-and-desist orders from large corporations and pop stars. To prepare for an upcoming New York City run, Wiseman’s performing Actionable one night only at the Drake tonight; his PowerPoint multimedia show kicks off promptly at 9 p.m., with Elvis Monday‘s typically eclectic bill of music acts (and starving artists buffet) following after. The Drake Hotel Underground (1150 Queen Street West), 9 p.m., FREE.
COMEDY: Last Monday, our comedy pick was a stand-up elimination show called Clash of the Comedians. This week’s Alt.Comedy Lounge showcase features several comics who competed, like Rhiannon Archer and Graham Chittenden (who won); the Alt.Dot’s guest MC is Mark Forward, the judge who tore strips off them last week. It could make for an interesting dynamic on stage. The Rivoli (332 Queen Street West), 9 p.m., PWYC.

CORRECTION: DECEMBER 13, 2010, 6:03 PM We originally reported that the Leaf tickets being awarded as a prize at tonight’s trivia event were for Wednesday night’s game. In fact, they are for the game taking place on January 15, 2011.
