WHERE: Council Chamber, Toronto City Hall.
WHEN: Tuesday, December 7, just after 2 p.m.
WHAT: To varying choruses of huzzahs and boos across the city, Robert Bruce Ford was inaugurated Toronto’s sixty-fourth mayor at council’s first and largely ceremonial meeting this afternoon. After donning the ceremonial chain of office, a beaming Ford thanked his colleagues for their commitment to their constituents, and thanked the citizens of Toronto for coming out to vote in such high numbers. He went on to outline his four key priorities—customer service, transparent and accountable government, reducing the size and cost of government, and creating a “transportation city plan”—and then formally introduced his deputy mayor and the chairs of council’s standing committees. The first substantive meeting of the 2010–2014 term will take place December 16, during which council is expected to vote on some of Ford’s major election promises, such as repealing the vehicle registration tax.
