Extra, Extra: Mic Gets Tossed to Polar Bears, Bone Gets Tossed to a Bi-Polar Toronto, and 311 Gets Props in New York
Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.
- While feeding pumpkins to polar bears at the Toronto Zoo—you know, the usual—CTV News’ Tom Brown accidentally threw his microphone into their enclosure, too. He is still a little embarrassed.
- Today’s must read: Ed Keenan’s Eye cover story, “A Tale of Two Torontos,” which risks putting the burden for Ford’s victory a little too much on those people who didn’t vote for him rather than those who did, but which is still very good and very thoughtful in spite of that.
- Roger Ebert has discovered Rob Ford and Rob Ford’s views on cyclists. And in far more than the two hundred characters it took for Ebert to sum up Toronto’s mayor-to-be on Twitter, the Star and Toronto Life report on said tweets.
- NOW‘s annual Best of Toronto issue is out. This time ’round, it’s up with the masses, down with the critics: all of the winners are readers’ choice. After winning NOW‘s readers’ poll for Best Blog two years running, we were runners-up this year. Thanks for the love nonetheless, NOW readers, and congrats to winner She Does the City!
- Wired explores the great value—and greater potential—of New York City’s 311 service. Toronto, you may recall, has got a pretty great 311 service of its own, which Rob Ford has previously voted to cut and which he might target as mayor.
- And from the Globe, a pretty chart of the available office space in the big downtown skycrapers.
