Urban Planner: October 8, 2010

Urban Planner is Torontoist’s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

The G20 was a heavily photographed event, and many of those pictures will be on display this weekend at Hindsight’s exhibit at Studio 561. Photo by Nick Kozak/Torontoist.

In today’s Urban Planner, the unpopular G20 (in photos), popular paint-off Art Battle celebrates its anniversary, popular Mexican playwright Amaranta Leyva debuts a new play, and popular local acts (like Diamond Rings and Clothes Make The Man) and touring acts (like Casiotone For the Painfully Alone and Los Campesinos!) play shows.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Tonight’s the opening party for Hindsight’s G20/20 Photo & Art Show, which runs all weekend. Featuring a wide selection of photos from the tumultuous weekend in June, there will be an open mural as well as an official exhibit, so bring your own prints down to add to the wall. Studio 561 (561 Bloor Street West), 7–11 p.m., $5–10 (donations to go to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association).
PAINTING: The popular timed competitive paint-off, Art Battle, is marking its first anniversary with this eighth edition. The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., $10 ($5 entry for painters).
THEATRE: It’s the second and final night of the De Colores Festival of New Works, a Latin American theatre development series at Theatre Direct’s Artscape space. Tonight features two new plays by Marilo Nuñez (of the Alameda Theatre Company) and Amaranta Leyva (noted Mexican children’s theatre playwright). Artscape Wychwood Barns, Theatre Direct (601 Christie Street), 8 p.m., $15 ($12 students/seniors).
MUSIC: Popular and colourful synth star Diamond Rings plays a free unplugged set in the stacks of the Toronto Public Library’s Parkdale branch this evening. Parkdale Branch Public Library (1303 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., FREE (ALL AGES).
MUSIC: There are plenty of popular local acts playing shows tonight (including Put the Rifle Down, Whale Tooth, and Entire Cities), but Clothes Make The Man wins “best local showcase”; they’ve got guests from seven popular Toronto bands (Dinosaur Bones, The Balconies, Fox Jaws, Hot Kid, Bad Ideas, Make Your Exit, and Mad Ones) joining them for a Nirvana cover night. Sneaky Dee’s (431 College Street), doors at 9 p.m., $5.
MUSIC: There are also plenty of great touring artists in town (including Los Campesinos!, King Khan and the Shrines, and Hot Hot Heat), but our pick for the night would be underground hero Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (a.k.a. Chicago’s Owen Ashworth), as it’s his final tour under the Casiotone moniker. Plus, he’s joined by Australian act Otoutu, and Toronto’s own Mantler. The Piston (937 Bloor Street West), 10 p.m., $10.
