Urban Planner: October 19, 2010

Urban Planner is Torontoist’s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

Speaking tonight in Toronto: Toronto’s outgoing mayor, its literary cartographer, and a former playmate. Decisions, decisions.

WORDS: The city may be biting its collective nails down to nubs as the mayoral race nears its end, but one thing remains a matter of certitude: David Miller is closing up shop. The outgoing mayor will be reflecting on his reign in an exit interview at the Toronto Reference Library tonight, with a cash bar and Q&A period to follow. Now that he’s tricked us into thinking he may run again and cast his official endorsement, there’s not much left for Miller to do but wax nostalgic on the good times had—and probably pimp his new book a little bit. Who knows—maybe he’ll get candid and dish the City Hall dirt he’s kept a lid on all these years? Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street), 7–8:30 p.m., FREE.
WORDS: For years Amy Lavender Harris has been charting the literary landscape of Toronto, a bold task she set for herself as part of the Imagining Toronto Project. Tonight she will release her new book, a culmination of her work that will guide readers through an elaborate tour of the city as imagined by its many talented and diverse writers. The event will also serve as the tenth anniversary party for Harris’s publisher Mansfield Press, and will also feature the release of new works by Leigh Nash, Peter Norman, Natasha Nuhanovic, and Priscila Uppal. The Boat Restaurant (158 Augusta Avenue), 7:30 p.m., FREE.
COMEDY: Former Playboy Playmate, actress, and comedian Jenny McCarthy will be stopping by Yuk Yuk’s tonight for one night of standup promoting her new book Love, Lust, & Faking It. Popularly known as the laughing man’s sex symbol, McCarthy has often used her comedy to deconstruct sexual iconography and taboos, with varying results. In recent years she has become an ardent but much-contested activist for autism awareness, after her son’s diagnosis with the condition. Tickets to the event include a free copy of McCarthy’s book, with an autograph session following her appearance. Yuk Yuk’s (224 Richmond Street West), 7:30 p.m., $30.
