Urban Planner: September 21, 2010
Urban Planner is Torontoist’s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].
In today’s planner: musicians hit the streets, Toronto lifts its mugs to suds, and geeks conquer the culinary arts.
MUSIC: An impressive cross section of Canadian musicians will be taking to the streets today for the International Day of Peace—and bringing their instruments with them. Busking for CHANGE is an event in its third year, which was inspired by Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, after he spent twelve hours busking in 2007 to raise funds for War Child. Performers such as Sass Jordan, illScarlett, Michou, Allie Hughes, and of course Raine himself will be performing on public streets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., as per this schedule. After a long day of minstreling, the after party will take place at The Garrison at 7:30 p.m. with performances by The Reason, Gentlemen Husbands, Crush Luther, and The Organ Thieves, with admission by donation to War Child. Various locations, 7 a.m.–7 p.m., PWYC.
BEER: Once you’ve given generously to celebrity panhandlers, you can reward your own generosity by partaking of Toronto Beer Week! For seven days, the city’s cup will runneth over as over forty-five venues and fifteen breweries celebrate a good pint. A sampling of today’s itinerary includes a cask challenge at Bar Volo, an all-you-can-eat Sausagefest at Cloak & Dagger, a stout taste-off at Smokeless Joe’s, plus more lectures, pairings, and tastings than you can shake a longneck at. Various locations, times, and prices.
FOOD: With all the red-faced shouting on food television these days, it’s easy to forget that the culinary arts can be as much about brains as passion. Food nerd Jeff Potter is bringing intellectualism back to the kitchen with his new book Cooking for Geeks, which promises “real science, great hacks, and good food.” Tonight he’ll be holding a demo and signing, where tickets are free but registration is required. Hopefully he’ll offer up something as exciting—and messy—as his thirty second ice cream. Camaraderie Coworking Inc. (102 Adelaide Street East, suite 200), 6:30 p.m., FREE.
