Torontoist Is Looking For More New Contributors
Have you always wanted to contribute to Torontoist? We’re always looking for smart and talented new people—writers, illustrators, and photographers—but right now, we’re looking for a few things in particular on top of that: writers who’re eager to wade into the swamp that is municipal politics in time for the upcoming election, and writers who’re eager to wake up unspeakably early to write Newsstand, our daily news roundup.
Sound like you?
To apply for any of the positions below, please email me, David Topping, at [email protected].
Newsstand Writer
Newsstand is our morning digest of local news from other outlets across the city, published at around 8 a.m. every weekday and 10 a.m. every Saturday. We’re looking for an organized, careful, well-read, interesting, and interested writer with terrific curatorial skills, an early schedule, and (when appropriate) a decent sense of humour to take on writing Newsstand a few mornings a week. What we want when you apply: Before noon on Sunday, September 26, tell us about yourself and why you’re interested in writing Newsstand. If you’re one of our finalists, we’ll ask you to write a demo Newsstand for a day of your choosing the following week—we’re looking for someone who can start on the week of October 4. You may also want to review our Contribute page to find out more about what we can offer you and what we’re looking for in all our contributors. (You can ignore the “What We Want When You Apply” section of that page, though.)
Politics Writers
The municipal election is nearly here, and Torontoist’s newly launched politics hub is filling up as you’re reading this. Torontoist wants more—more analysis, more news, more attention on the ward-by-ward races and the mayor’s race, more smart people saying smart things. (Sometimes, making stupid things, too.) After the election’s over, no matter the result, Torontoist’s going to keep on keeping on, and our attention is not going to leave City Hall or the streets of our city. We want contributors who understand how important politics can be—and who know how to make politics interesting, whether the subject is the zoning bylaw or the five cent garbage bag fee or bike lanes or Rob Ford. And we want writers who have opinions. What we want when you apply: Everything that the “What We Want When You Apply” section of our Contribute page charts out here: a bit about yourself; a few specific post ideas—what you’d write about if you were on staff today; some samples of past work; and some constructive criticism about what you think could use improving on Torontoist. The sooner you apply, the better.
If you’re interested in writing for us, but aren’t sure that either Newsstand or municipal politics is the beat for you, no matter: we’re still interested in hearing from you, whatever you’d want to do with us. (Right now, we’re looking for people who’d be particularly good at writing about things we haven’t been writing very much about: the environment, food, social justice, and sports. If that’s you, check this out first.) To apply, start here.
Or if your talents are more visual, we’re looking for a few new photographers. Especially if you can get out and shoot during weekdays, or can shoot concerts, you should email us. You can find out more about how to apply here.
