Jackie Burroughs Dies at 71

After a long battle with stomach cancer, British-born Canadian actress Jackie Burroughs passed away on Wednesday in her Toronto home, CBC News reports. Born in Lancashire, England, Burroughs came to Canada at the age of twelve, eventually making a name for herself on stage at Stratford and Shaw festivals. She went on to net memorable parts in Canadian films like Phillip Borsos’s The Grey Fox and David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone. But to most Canadians, Burroughs is best known for playing stern schoolmarm Hetty King on the CBC’s Road to Avonlea from 1990 to 1996. Burroughs also recently appeared in Ed Gass-Donnelly’s thriller Small Town Murder Songs, which premiered this year at TIFF.
