What Toronto Really Needed Was a Song About the Sunrise Propane Explosion
Writing overtly political music is hard. Writing overtly political music about 2008’s propane fire in North York, which killed a firefighter and a Sunrise Propane employee, the apparent result of an illegal “tank-to-tank transfer”? That’s…really hard.
That didn’t stop Toronto band Saucer from trying. In an email sent to Torontoist last night, the band explained: “We in the Saucer camp were pretty dumbfounded at what happened over at the Sunrise Propane refilling plant; as a result of that we decided to write a little commentary on the situation in time for the second year anniversary.” That bit of commentary is their two minute–long rock song “Propane for the People.” The lyrics are a little hard to make out, but the chorus goes “It’s gonna blow! / It’s gonna blow! / It’s gonna blow! / Propane for the people,” and it sounds like there’s another bit that goes “did it cross your mind? / living by the gas tanks,” and another that goes “it stinks round there / it’s not a place for homes.” We’re pretty sure it counts as an illegal whatthehuh?-to-seriously? transfer.
