City Council Approves Biggest Flagpole on Continent, Amid Penis Jokes

Today marks the end of Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti’s (Ward 7, York West) much-publicized quest to bring North America’s largest flagpole to his ward: City Council approved the plan [PDF], pending the acquisition of funding. The 125-metre pole will stand in a public square west of Highway 400. The Emery Village BIA is financing construction. Councillor Howard Moscoe (Ward 15, Eglinton-Lawrence) proposed an amendment that the BIA be encouraged to seek sponsorship “from companies like Pfizer Inc.,” which actually carried. “In the end, council voted 30-6 to support the erection,” sniggers the Star. We know who we’d hire to handle the job. [UPDATE, 7:55 PM: The Post’s Peter Kuitenbrouwer rightly points out that the plan to build the pole is contingent upon one more round of voting by the Emery Village BIA.]
