Sound Tracks: “West Coast” by D-Sisive
Believe it or not, music videos still exist. Sound Tracks trolls the internet to find the best and the worst of local artists’ new singles and the good, bad, or otherwise noteworthy visuals that accompany them.
Only a few W’s are actually raised in the new D-Sisive video, the first from his recently released album, (er, one of a few recently released—it’s the most recent. The guy’s prolific, what can we say?), Vaudeville, but that hook is shamelessly recognizable. Both the chorus and the euphoric gang-vocaled “na na na” hook were borrowed from the 2007 Coconut Records song of the same name, and though D-Sisive also throws a “drinking, smoking, straight west-coasting” line in there, the video is definitely more Jason Schwartzman sweet than Dr. Dre hard.
Directed by Ken Galloway (who has also worked with Shad and longtime D-Sisive collaborator Muneshine), “West Coast” features an old-man D-Sisive (né Derek Christoff) scooting around a suburb (dude, you can’t take that thing on the highway), reflecting on old romance, and packing up to leave (to the west coast, probably) alongside a current D-Sisive rhyming amidst a sea of cherry blossoms and blue sky. Our favourite moment is definitely the giggling old-man D-Sisive near the end of the clip. It seems insignificant, but it’s a somewhat rare sight on the face of the sometimes-jokey, uber-witty, intensely introspective MC.
