Extra, Extra: “Respect for Taxpayers,” Streetcar SMS, and the Hidden Cameras Do it Like They’re Overseas
Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.
- Today in Rob Ford: a weird little animated video avowing his “Respect for Taxpayers” debuts online the day before he says at council that police were “too nice” to G20 protesters, many of whom are respectful taxpayers. To quote Eye‘s Chris Bilton: “Maybe it’s time to really start questioning the penny-pinching, man-of-the-people image of Ford that’s been accepted thus far and think about what Toronto might look like under the reign of the real Rob Ford.” Yep.
- A sequel to yesterday’s Vintage Ad, about the Toronto Sun‘s 1977 contest that give readers the chance to have dinner at the CN Tower with (the actor who played) Chewbacca: meet the lucky winners.
- On Thursday afternoon, the TTC will launch the latest bit of their Next Vehicle Arrival System, which gets riders real-time data on when their ride’s coming: SMS-delivered streetcar arrival times for individual stops. Bus stops won’t be ready until later this year or early next year.
- They Shoot Music Don’t They features The Hidden Cameras playing “Breathe On It” and “Underage” on the streets of Vienna, which’ll conjure up memories of an old La Blogotheque episode shot with the band in Paris in 2006. Back at home, the Cameras are working on something theatrical based on last year’s album Origin:Orphan.
- And what’s much-loved Raptor Chris Bosh’s new team gonna be? Oh. Well, Toronto’ll miss you too.
