The Summer of Oprah: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
This summer, Erin Balser is reading all twenty titles on Oprah’s Summer Reading List. The Summer of Oprah will be chronicled on [email protected] every Monday and Thursday throughout July and August.
Originally, it made sense to tackle this list by simply reading the books in the order Oprah listed them. Otherwise I’d be bouncing around, starting with my presumed favourites and working my way toward the titles I dreaded, leaving me in late August dirty and unkempt in a dark corner rocking back and forth, muttering incoherently. It felt likely that I would end up like the three protagonists in Oprah’s first selection, Kings of the Earth, as they “lived in squalor on a ramshackle dairy farm in central New York state. They barely wash, their coveralls are splattered in cow manure, and their tiny house is a fetid mess.”
Sounds about right to me.
