Extra, Extra: Taggers, Braggers, and Stars and Sons
Torontoist closes out each weekday with a quick collection of just about everything we think you ought to care about (or ought not miss)—say hi to Extra, Extra.
- If you’ve forgotten, this is why you like Broken Social Scene. NOW, via the ever-excellent Colin Medley, caught the band’s acoustic performance of “Stars & Sons” at their Sunday mini-concert at Soundscapes.
- Today in Banksy: one more piece has been painted over, and now there’s a poem about the street artist’s Toronto trip (“Come see the emphemera / Come quick, it disappears / Painted over by angry landlords”), incidentally by Rob Tyrie, the same guy who tipped us off to the vandalism. Staunchly anti–street art commenter davedave, meanwhile, has some poetry of his own.
- Even if you are an unabashed fan of street art, taggers are still pretty hard to defend, aren’t they? Take the new Lee’s Palace mural, which we wrote about this morning—it’s already been scrawled on top of, too.
- A “bloodbath” at Proud FM last week left most of the station’s on-air talent fired (though the move could have perhaps been anticipated). Those ditched will not go quietly into that good night, but maybe they should just go the easier route and reply to Proud FM’s new job posting for a “radio star.”
- A Brampton comic book store, Stadium Comics, is trying to lure Michael Cera back home, now that he’s a big famous Hollywood star. “Should Michael be too busy to appear at our store, we’ll also accept a guest appearance by one of Brampton’s other celebrities….We’d just ask that they try to look a little like Michael Cera, or adopt some of his mannerisms for the day.”
- Here’s a big Google map of Toronto thrift and vintage stores. Happy hunting.
- And the Polaris Music Prize revealed their jury today. We’re mostly telling you about that so we can brag about our own Nicole Villeneuve, who’ll be representing little old Torontoist. She has received very clear instructions to vote only, and repeatedly, for Owen Pallett.
