The guy who broke three of Noel Gallagher’s ribs at the Virgin Festival in 2008 has been sentenced to twelve months house arrest. The crown had asked for six to eight months of jail, prompting speculation that the judge might be a Blur fan. Danny Sullivan, 48, pleaded guilty and apologized to the usually invincible Gallagher, who wrote that he felt “like he’d been hit by a bus.” Poor rock star.
Nazim Gillani’s co-accused pleaded guilty to fraud charges on Wednesday. Alexander Wiafe stole $1.6 million from the subsidiary of RONA where he briefly worked and tried to wire it to Hong Kong from a Staples fax machine. Gillani is the guy who wrote in an email that former MP Rahim Jaffer “has opened up the prime minister’s office to us.” The Star speculates that much of the media was just there to get photos of former Argo Mike Mihelic, who happens to be Gillani’s offensive guard vice-president of business affairs. Not a single mention of busty hookers was made.
Councillor Karen Stintz (Ward 16, Eglinton Lawrence) wrote an editorial in today’s National Post defending the bike lanes on University Avenue and lobbying for a transit plan that includes bikes. She even went as far as to chide Toronto for not being as bike-friendly as New York. Stintz has been known to confuse Torontonians about which way she swings politically: she won her first election on an anti-development platform, but recently stuck her neck out in support of an unpopular mall expansion at Yonge and Eglinton.
Toronto has transportation woes; Durham has toilet problems. Apparently disposable baby wipes are being flushed with such abandon that they’re clogging up the whole suburban sewer system. The Star is reporting that pipes that would normally last three to four years are being replaced every couple of months because of tiny threads from the wipes that cause blockages.
A man has been accused of taking pictures of a woman while she slept naked. It all started with a romantic date at the LCBO, after which the victim passed out. Umar Akbar, 56, was charged with one count of sexual assault after the woman approached a parking enforcement officer on Danforth Avenue two weeks after the incident.
